Peck's Bad Boy with the Circus (1938)

Mildly funny, especially the shots of Tommy Kelly in a muddy frock.

Le Pélican (1973)

Gérard Blain was a former boy actor himself and had several major adult roles, including in Truffaut's first film, Les Mistons, and Chabrol's excellent diptych Le Beau Serge and Les Cousins, before becoming a director. His cinematic style is definitely not everyone's cup of tea -- he told his actors not to project emotion, for instance -- but I love his works. This film has a lot to do with his experiences of emotional neglect in childhood and his intense love for his own sons. Les <<Amis>>, his outstanding semiautobiographical first film, tells the story of an intergenerational relationship and won the Golden Leopard at the 1971 Locarno film festival. Pierre et Djemila, his 1987 Romeo and Juliet story about a French boy and an Algerian-French girl, is somewhat overlooked now but also very fine.

Penda's Fen (1974)

The musical subplot and the heartfeltness -- it's based closely on David Rudkin's own growing up -- elevate this interesting, patchworky, slightly barmy piece.

Percy, Buffalo Bill och jag (2005)

Follow-up to My Friend Percy's Magic Gym Shoes. Like My Friend... and Dårfinkar & dönickar, it's based on a book by Ulf Stark and the script is written by him. Not as good as Dårfinkar & dönickar, but well worth a look.

Periferic (2010)

Based on a story by Cristian Mungiu, director of the wonderful films Beyond the Hills and 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days. The latter, together with Chabrol's A Story of Women, must be the best film ever made about illegal abortion -- though Vera Drake is also impressive to be sure and definitely deserves a watch, even if it's perhaps not quite up to Mike Leigh's best films Life is Sweet and Peterloo. For legal abortion you can't do better than Never Rarely Sometimes Always the superb Dutch short film Magnesium. Periferic could make a good dual watch with Oslo 31. august by the duo of director Joachim Trier and co-writer Eskil Vogt, who've also given us two other very good films: Reprise and Thelma.

Perl oder Pica (2006)

Good piece based on Jhemp Hoscheit's semi-autobiographical novel, with Hoscheit's son Ben Hoscheit as the lead. Depicts near-universal experiences in the specific context of 1960s Luxembourg, with its social conservatism, strong Roman Catholicism, multilingual school system, memories of Nazi occupation, etc.

Peter Pan (1924)

Peter Pan is one of those stories that people just keep on making into movies. Some books transfer well to the screen and a few even gain something in the process, but a lot are better off staying books rather than being adapted for film or TV. Happily, as Peter Pan was written to be performed, that problem doesn't arise here. This, its first film version, is as close as we can get to seeing how the original stage play was acted and directed. Betty Bronson was picked by Barrie himself to play Peter. Could make a good dual watch with Jan Švankmajer's Alice.
