Love Does Grow On Trees (2008)

Could make a good dual watch with the shorts Offside and Two Piece.

Love That Boy (2003)

Unique movie, stylistically plain, at times goofily hyper-real, at times touchingly realistic.

Lucky (2011)

Feature film that grew out of the director's short film of the same name. The short film, included on the Film Movement DVD, is better, a real must-watch, as is the Swedish series Don't Ever Wipe Tears Without Gloves. This one does too much telling rather than showing and you can feel it straining a bit. Nonetheless it has lots of good qualities, including clear and classic cinematography and good old-fashioned storytelling -- in fact the plot's a bit like a twenty-first-century South African version of Oliver Twist. Sihle Dlamini sturdily carries the enterprise on his young shoulders and the two main adult actors are very big names.

Ma vie en rose (1997)

A wonderful movie. It's not meant to be totally realistic: it was conceived as a modern fairy tale. For a more realistic take on similar subject matter, see Gun Hill Road, or Noor, or the fictional shorts Barbie Boy, Sam, D. Asian and Eddie, or the documentary shorts Pink Boy and Niet op meisjes...but don't forget that way back in 1997, this earnest, broad-brush, heart-on-its-sleeve film was out there paving the way for those more nuanced and wide-ranging depictions of gender-variant people.

Mabul (2011)

A strong storyline, good acting, lovely camerawork and one of the few realistic fictional screen portrayals of a low-functioning autistic person. Also see The Black Balloon and Gett: The Trial of Vivian Amsalem.

Macbeth (1983)

Good BBC Shakespeare with not much in the way of cuts and with Crispin Mair making a welcome appearance.

Macondo (2014)

First feature by documentary filmmaker Sudabeh Mortezai, who spent her childhood partly in Tehran and partly in Vienna. It straddles the line between fiction and documentary: improvisation, people essentially playing themselves, Friday prayer and German lessons filmed as they actually happen -- and instead of caterers, Chechen and Somali women from the neighbourhood cooked for the film crew. The result is a thoughtful study of the main character, well acted by Ramasan Minkailov, as he struggles to cope with the expectation that he be the family patriarch now that his father is dead.

Maid in Manhattan (2002)

Tyler Garcia Posey shines in an otherwise undistinguished movie. There are a few good movies in the romantic comedy and fairytale romance genres: Available Men and Acceptable Behavior come to mind for the former, Were the World Mine for the latter. This isn't one of those. But Tyler's talents almost make up for it!

La Mala educación (2004)

Undeniably masterful. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but should not be missed. Its pivotal plotline is a love story between two boys, seemingly the only genuine love in the entire film. Black and brilliant stuff.
