Storm Boy (1976)

Gentle and beautifully shot classic based on Colin Thiele's novel. Nice performance from Greg Rowe.

Stranger Things (2016-????)

Genre pastiche and period recreation, made adeptly and lovingly. At times a bit heavier on the gore and body horror than many will care for. The Upside Down is a nice idea nicely shown and there are some emotionally truthful and touching parts -- Mike's caring friendship with the sensitive Will, Will's grief that his friends are growing up and away from him, the love between Mike and Eleven, Steve's development. I even liked the Chicago episode. Can't stand Murray though. The first series was a closely focused mystery, the second season expanded on it really well, the third season was kind of the silly season, but still enjoyable.

A Summer at Grandpa's (1984)

Wonderful early film by the distinguished director Hou Hsiao-hsien, inspired by the childhood memories of screenwriter Chu Tien-wen. It's the beginning of a trilogy, the next two being A Time to Live, A Time to Die and Dust in the Wind. Hou's other unmissable trilogy is A City of Sadness, The Puppetmaster and Good Men, Good Women, three films about the twentieth-century history of Taiwan.

Sværvægter (2014)

Very good little movie, very Danish also: if you can't be doing with von Trier (I can't myself), try this as an example of a particular style and tone in Danish filmmaking. See some Carl Th. Dreyer too, of course: Michael, The Passion of Joan of Arc, Vampyr, Day of Wrath, Ordet...William Sonne looks a little like Liam Mower of Billy Elliot: The Musical.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

Very good with some fine, committed acting and singing from Ed Sanders of the National Youth Theatre.

Swing (2002)

Lovely Tony Gatlif film. Mondo is perhaps his most beautiful work and his best film after that must surely be Korkoro, which is about the Romani experience of the Holocaust.

Taare Zameen Par (2007)

Lovingly made, lively, powerful, important film that accurately portrays a dyslexic child's struggles. Darsheel Safary is very impressive. The only sour note for me was the teacher's speech about famous people who supposedly had dyslexia too: the evidence for this is pretty thin in most of the cases he mentions. But it would be churlish to complain about that too much.

Terre battue (2014)

Very good small film about family, pressure, ambition and sports. The boy star actually knows how to play tennis, and the director was a high-level tennis player as a kid. Could make a good dual watch with Sarah Prefers to Run.
