The Loneliest Runner (1976)

Some laughably gee-whiz dialogue and unconvincing Olympics bookends ultimately can't detract from the core story. It's based on Michael Landon's own childhood experiences and has the ring of truth to it. The three central performances are all good.

The Lost Prince (2003)

Very Poliakoff. Overlook the odd inaccuracy and anachronism and you have an absorbing piece of TV with a fascinating central character nicely played by Matthew James Thomas.

Love Does Grow On Trees (2008)

Could make a good dual watch with the shorts Offside and Two Piece.

Ma vie en rose (1997)

A wonderful movie. It's not meant to be totally realistic: it was conceived as a modern fairy tale. For a more realistic take on similar subject matter, see Gun Hill Road, or Noor, or the fictional shorts Barbie Boy, Sam, D. Asian and Eddie, or the documentary shorts Pink Boy and Niet op meisjes...but don't forget that way back in 1997, this earnest, broad-brush, heart-on-its-sleeve film was out there paving the way for those more nuanced and wide-ranging depictions of gender-variant people.

Mabul (2011)

A strong storyline, good acting, lovely camerawork and one of the few realistic fictional screen portrayals of a low-functioning autistic person. Also see The Black Balloon and Gett: The Trial of Vivian Amsalem.

Macbeth (1983)

Good BBC Shakespeare with not much in the way of cuts and with Crispin Mair making a welcome appearance.

Macondo (2014)

First feature by documentary filmmaker Sudabeh Mortezai, who spent her childhood partly in Tehran and partly in Vienna. It straddles the line between fiction and documentary: improvisation, people essentially playing themselves, Friday prayer and German lessons filmed as they actually happen -- and instead of caterers, Chechen and Somali women from the neighbourhood cooked for the film crew. The result is a thoughtful study of the main character, well acted by Ramasan Minkailov, as he struggles to cope with the expectation that he be the family patriarch now that his father is dead.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

Something quite rare: adventure and friendship at sea combined with careful, detailed and broadly very accurate period recreation.

Matías y Jerónimo (2015)

Eloquent, layered little film, beautifully shot as well. Has now also been made into a good full-length film, Esteros, in which the boys meet again as adults, with plenty of delightful flashbacks to their childhood days.
