The Kings of Appletown (2007)

OK rural adventure in which the twin boy stars play cousins, with Dylan's hair cropped and dyed brown. Or else it's a wig. This must have been filmed around the same time as Suite Life season 3; it's interesting to see them tackle something a bit more substantial than the one-note silliness of their Suite Life characters.

Maniac Magee (2003)

Always good to see Michael Angarano. This is a slightly odd and disjointed low-budget adaptation of the much-loved Jerry Spinelli novel.

Marshall the Miracle Dog (2015)

Good-hearted, predictable little movie. Lucas Carroll is fine but the adults' acting is somewhat sub-par.

No More Baths (1998)

More determinedly wholesome direct-to-video fare from Feature Films for Families.

Norman Loves Rose (1982)

Some funny moments, but the film is rather cavalier about the feelings of a thirteen-year-old who is basically used in secret to father a child.

Oliver Twist (1982)

Does some downright peculiar things to the storyline.

The Omen (2006)

Very close to the original but the original is, as usual, much better. This one does, however, look good and have a few fresh ideas, some of which I quite liked, though others may dislike them. One major drawback here is that this Damien is openly malevolent, as opposed to 1976s Damien: it's never clear how much that one understands of what is going on and the part he is to play in it, and that's one of the 1976 version's strengths. Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick cropped up again in 2015 as the lead in a low-budget but surprisingly good short film called After School, about a boy secretly in love with his male best friend.

Peck's Bad Boy with the Circus (1938)

Mildly funny, especially the shots of Tommy Kelly in a muddy frock.
