The Return of the Psammead (1993)
Charming series by Helen Cresswell of Moondial, The Secret World of Polly Flint etc. It's a tribute to the work of the great E. Nesbit, pioneer of realistic fictional depictions of children and of low fantasy -- mind you, Edward Eager was also a great admirer of Nesbit's, and he used her inspiration to create not spinoffs but low fantasies set in the time and place he knew, such as the wonderful Half Magic. As Five Children and It, The Phoenix and the Carpet and the later standalone The Enchanted Castle have all been given TV series, it's a pity that The Story of the Amulet, the third book in the trilogy, never has been. For that matter, why hasn't Half Magic?

Praised for its realism. Adapts the book of the same name by Jan van Tonder, who has a cameo. A welcome surprise!

A real heartstring-tugger. It's hard not to be won over.

My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Sammy's Super T-Shirt (1978)
Enjoyable and neatly-made Children's Film Foundation piece.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Santa Mesa (2008)
Contrived in spots but thoughtful and admirably restrained.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Il sapore del grano (1986)
A bit clunky in spots but nicely done overall. Unusual, interesting and important in that it treats the growing closeness between the boy and the young man not in isolation, but in the context of the man's involvement -- mainly friendly and affectionate, sometimes hostile, sometimes ambivalent -- with all the members of the boy's family.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Schlafes Bruder (1995)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Seachd: The Inaccessible Pinnacle (2007)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993)
Formulaic but very well-executed. Apparently not very accurate about tournament chess, and the best fictional chess movie ever made must surely remain the 1925 Russian short comedy Chess Fever. However, Max Pomeranc's lead performance is such a treat to watch that it's hard to care about anything else!
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10The Second Jungle Book: Mowgli & Baloo (1997)
