12 toner ned (2009)

The director of this film also sang as a boy soloist with the Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir and had considerable difficulty dealing emotionally with his voice change. Other good boychoir documentaries include Die Thomaner -- Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, Paul's Children and Domspatzen -- Ein Jahr mit Deutschlands ältestem Knabenchor. Also check out Die Tanzschüler der Pariser Oper.

Les amitiés particulières (1964)

One of the most beautiful and romantic films of all time. Didier Haudepin is spellbinding, and I'd also like to put in a word for François Leccia, who gives an excellent, understated performance as Lucien Rouvère.

Aniki Bóbó (1942)

A beautiful early neorealist monument widely considered one of the best Portuguese films ever made, along with The Tyrannical Father, The Green Years and Blood.

Aparajito (1956)

The three films of this trilogy -- the last one is Apur Sansar -- are widely considered the best Indian films ever made. Also see Ray's other great films The Music Room, The Big City and Charulata and Ritwik Ghatak's brilliant films The Cloud-Capped Star and Reason, Debate and a Story.

Au revoir les enfants (1987)

Also see Malle's Lacombe, Lucien, a remarkably good film about a rather stupid and cruel youth in rural southern France who joins the German police and becomes involved with a Jewish girl.

Bastien, Bastienne (1979)

Boys singing and acting one of Mozart's childhood works! What's not to like? And if you did like it, there's also a DVD of the 1995 TV production of another of Mozart's childhood operas, Apollo et Hyacinthus, starring soloists from the brilliant Tölz Boys' Choir.

Children (1976)

Terence Davies's very first film, featuring fourteen-year-old Philip Mawdsley. Made before he went to film school -- Madonna and Child was his graduation piece -- and it does show, but so does his remarkably original cinematic gift.

Les démons (2015)

Extraordinary, often quite dazzling film that has been deservedly compared to The Spirit of the Beehive. It also merits comparison to Fritz Lang's M. Excellent acting from Édouard Tremblay-Grenier in a demanding role. Miriam Makeba's beloved hit song Pata Pata is used in a key scene, and, interestingly, was also used in Hazel, Tamer Ruggli's wonderful 2012 comic short about a gay boy whose feminine tendencies are driving his mother nuts. Ruggli has also made Cappuccino, a very good short about a gay older teen boy.
