Promises
(2000)

Country: USA

Genre: Documentary

IMDb

Synopsis

In this alternative look at the Jewish-Palestinian conflict, three filmmakers followed a group of seven local children between 1995 and 1998. They all have a totally different background. These seven children tell their own story about growing up in Jerusalem. Through this portrait of their generation, we see how deep rooted and almost insoluble the problems of the Middle East have become.

This is a truly eye opening movie. To see how these children's minds are created by not only their parents but by their schools and surrounding circumstances that affect their lives individually. They all have such a different diverse universe that they each live in; just being a few kilometers away from each other. Created by the surrounding hatred, vengeance, national allegiance, walls, fences, checkpoints and a child's want for peace and brotherhood. The follow-up was just as important as the original filming. They become more polarized into the two sides as they feel forced or actually forced into the views of their respective little worlds that they live in. This is a must see for those in the US, Canada and in much of Europe because most have not nor can not understand living in the situation that these children have to live in, in the movie.

A moving and extremely informative look at the Arab-Israeli conflict from the kids points of view. This is a real education for those like me who have had only the sketchiest idea of the geography and history involved.
