1-2-3 Corona
(1948)
AKA: Eins-zwei-drei Corona
Country: Germany
Genre: Drama
Synopsis
In Berlin in the summer of 1945, gangs of feral orphaned boys roam the destroyed city. When a circus arrives nearby, the boys are charmed by a Trapeze artiste called Corona. They are upset when the circus manager insults her, and plan a revenge by setting a trap in the ring. But their scheme fails, and it is Corona who is injured. Being unable to work, she is dismissed. The boys take care of her, and as she recovers she teaches them her art, so that the boys form a little circus of their own. Eventually, a manager of another circus offers Corona a job, but she is reluctant to leave the boys...
Notes
- Produced by DEFA
- Film historian Peter Pleyer (author of "Deutscher Nachkriegsfilm 1946-1948", published by C. J. Fahle, 1965) considers "1-2-3 Corona" to be a classic Trümmerfilm ('rubble film'), i.e. a film whose style is characterised by its use of location exteriors among the "rubble" of bombed-out cities in order to emphasise the gritty, depressing reality of the lives of the civilian survivors of WWII in the war's immediate aftermath. However, Pleyer also notes that the tone of "1-2-3 Corona" is more optimistic than other films of the genre.
