Synopsis
It is August of 1939, and eleven-year-old Joby (Richard Tolan) has won a place at Cressley Grammar School the following term. Over the course of the summer holiday, whilst his mother is in hospital for an operation, Joby begins to associate with the devil-may-care Gus Wilson.

- Based on the 1964 novel of the same name by Stan Barstow (1928-2011)
- The script of the TV play, which was also written by Stan Barstow, was published by Blackie in 1977.
