Synopsis
At the end of the Stalin era in the Soviet Union, military-medical service general Yuri Klensky is arrested in connection with the "Doctors' Plot" (1953), Stalin's latest paranoid fantasy. However, he unexpectedly finds that he is required to tend to a rather special patient. The story is narrated by the General's lonely young son Aleksei (Mikhail Dementyev), who lives with his family in a crowded apartment.
Notes
- Directed by Russian film-maker Aleksei German (1938-2013), who also directed such films as "Hard to Be a God" (2013)
- Winner of several awards, including the prize for Best Film at the 1999 Russian Guild of Film Critics awards. The film was also nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. Martin Scorsese, who was president of the Cannes jury that year, believed that the film obviously deserved to win the award, but he was unable to convince his fellow jurors.
- This film was seven years in the making, so actor Mikhail Dementyev was considerably younger during the shoot than he was when the film was finally released. In the film, his character is described as being 12 1/2 years old.
