Of Time and the City
(2008)
Country: UK
Genre: Documentary
Synopsis
In this gently melancholic visual love poem to his native city, filmmaker Terence Davies recalls his life growing up in Liverpool in the 1950s and 1960s, using newsreel and documentary footage supplemented by Davies' own lyrical narration. This critically acclaimed collage film contains much footage of (unidentified) Liverpudlian lads, showing how English boys looked and dressed in the mid-20th century.

A gorgeous elegy, mixing bitter criticism (particularly of the Church, but also of more modern trends) and warm nostalgia, a meditation on the corrosive nature of time that has something of the mood of T. S. Eliot's 'Four Quartets' (quoted in the film). Utterly unique. A work of genius.
