Synopsis
Toomai, a young boy growing up in India, longs to become a hunter. In the meantime, he helps his mahout (elephant driver) father with Kala Nag, a large elephant that has been in their family for four generations. Petersen hires Toomai's father and Kala Nag to help with a round-up of wild elephants, and Toomai tags along, since he has no one but his father to take care of him. However, the herd of elephants that Petersen is hunting turns out to be elusive. Meanwhile, when the other hired natives learn of Toomai's ambition to become a hunter, they mock him, telling him that he will become a hunter only when he sees the elephants dance. When, after the death of Toomai's father, Kala Nag injures the cruel elephant driver who has been assigned to him, Toomai, fearing that the elephant will be killed, takes Kala Nag and runs away into the jungle...
