I Could Go On Singing
(1963)

Country: UK, USA

Genre: Musical Drama

IMDb

Synopsis

Whilst in London for a big show, popular singer Jenny Bowman (Judy Garland) arranges a meeting with old flame David Donne (Dirk Bogarde), a man with whom, 15 years earlier, she had a son named Matt (Gregory Phillips) whom she left to David to bring up. Feeling that something is missing from her life, she forges a maternal bond with Matt, and eventually reveals, inadvertently, that she is his actual mother. When she decides that she wants to take Matt round the world with her, it is up to the boy to decide which of his parents is more deserving of his loyalty.

Notes

  • This film was Judy Garland's very last screen acting role.
  • The working title of this film was "The Lonely Stage", but it was renamed "I Could Go On Singing" in order to indicate to audiences that this would be the first time Garland would sing in a movie since "A Star Is Born" in 1954.
  • One of the schoolboys in the earlier part of the movie is a young Tony Robinson, who was later to become famous for such roles as 'Baldrick' in the BBC's 'Blackadder' series.

I like the story, and I like Gregory Phillips as Matt. Were boys really that exquisitely courteous and charming in the early 60s? I suppose many of them really were. I can't say that I'm a fan of Ms. Garland's singing, though. She really belts 'em out, doesn't she? I'm sure she could 'Go On Singing' - but I rather wish she wouldn't!
