Synopsis
Internationally famous writer Charles Dickens looks back over his life, from the time when, as a boy (played by Simon Bell), he found himself forced by his father's impecunious ways into abandoning his education at the age of 12 in order to work in a blacking factory.

Roy Dotrice is particularly wonderful as John Dickens, Charles' father (who was the model for Macawber), and Simon Bell is a very likeable young Charles - a completely natural actor. The miniseries is not, perhaps, perfect - episode 11 ("Nightmare") is rather peculiar and feels almost like a 'filler' episode - but on the whole this is an illuminating and unique production.
