It Couldn't Happen Here
(1987)
Country: UK
Synopsis
Pop music duo the Pet Shop Boys (Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe) wander passively through an increasingly threatening series of landscapes suggestive of destruction and entropy, that also takes them simultaneously back to their boyhood and into England's past, in an elegiac film that weaves together the poetry of Milton's 'Paradise Lost', Lewis Carroll's 'Through the Looking Glass', and Boethius' 'Consolation of Philosophy' with the music and songs of the Pet Shop Boys themselves.
Notes
- Starring the synth-pop duo the Pet Shop Boys (Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe), and featuring their early songs, this film was produced as an alternative to touring, but ended up a critical and commercial failure. Concerning its failure, Neil said in 1988 that "It was like a Ken Russell film; there is no more unfashionable filmmaker today. People nowadays expect to have to understand everything. Twenty years ago, people would have thought it was wild because they didn't have the faintest idea what was going on."
