Synopsis
The adventures of the blond rascal Lewie de Wittekop (Fons Exelmans), based on the character of Whitey from Ernest Claes' 1920 novel "De Witte", whose eternal mischief not only asks for punishment (which he often gets) but makes life difficult for his family, friends, people at school and the other inhabitants of his devoutly Catholic village - who in this version also get their own story-lines on the perennial human themes of affection, jealousy, greed, loyalty and love.
Notes
- "Wij, Heren van Zichem" ("We, Gentlemen of Zichem") was freely adapted from the works of Flemish author Ernest Claes (1885-1968), particularly the 1920 novel "De Witte" (first English translation, "Whitey", Oxford University Press, 1970).
- This was the second screen adaptation of Ernest Claes' "De Witte", and the only adaptation for a television series. The two other adaptations were the films De Witte (1934) and De Witte van Sichem (1980).
- All 26 episodes (spread over 3 seasons) of this Flemish TV series were shot entirely in the actual Flemish village of Zichem. It was an immensely successful series, at its peak attracting 2.96 million viewers - about three-quarters of all Flemings.
