Wittgenstein
(1993)
Country: UK
Genre: Biography
Synopsis
Young Ludwig Wittgenstein (Clancy Chassay) narrates the story of his life from his Viennese boyhood to his interest in aeronautical engineering, through to his interest in the philosophical foundations of mathematics which led him to study under the great Bertrand Russell at Cambridge - and ultimately led to his becoming one of the most celebrated philosophers of the twentieth century, in Derek Jarman's portrait of a moody, proud, perfectionist, homosexual genius.
Notes
- Based on the life of the great Austrian-British philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951)
- Directed by Derek Jarman (1942-1994), who radically rewrote an original screenplay by Terry Eagleton, the story is played out against a black backdrop with key props, as in a theatre production. The film was produced by Tariq Ali.
