Synopsis
Schoolboy Simon (Hugh Pollard) is an unlikely friend to a mad old witch. She lives in an ordinary terraced house with a black cat called George whom she constantly forgets to feed - which means he is forced to eat the furniture to stay alive. The witch is rude, irreverent and silly, and between them Simon and the witch get into numerous scrapes.

- Based on the 'Simon and the Witch' series of books (1976-92) by English children's writer Margaret Stuart Barry (b. 1927)
- Comprising 25 episodes of approximately 15 minutes each, spread across two seasons. Season 1 adapted and expanded upon the novel "Simon and the Witch in School" (1987) and Season 2 did the same for "The Witch and the Holiday Club" (1988).

A series where all the sympathetic child characters are male, and where the boys do not spend all their time gazing at the girls in adoration (quite the contrary!)...in other words, a series made before identity politics took over the BBC and its programming output turned to crap. Elizabeth Spriggs makes a wonderful witch, all the boy actors are great, and Hugh Pollard clicks his heels beautifully in the closing credit sequence.
