TV Series

Country: UK

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Family, Fantasy, Supernatural

IMDb

Synopsis

Single dad Count Dracula moves to modern-day Britain from Transylvania with his two children, Vladimir (Gerran Howell) and Ingrid. To his father's horror, Young Vlad Dracula doesn't want to prey on the local inhabitants, but strives instead to fit in with his new-found school pals - including his vampire-obsessed best friend Robin (Craig Roberts). Unfortunately for Vlad, however, fitting in with humans is not so easy when you're one of the undead...

Notes

  • Inspired by the 2002 novel of the same name by English author Michael Lawrence (b. 1943), which was in turn based very loosely on the premise of the 1897 horror novel "Dracula" by Irish author Bram Stoker (1847-1912)
  • Comprising 5 seasons. Seasons 1 and 2 were transmitted in 2006 and 2007-8 respectively. Then, after an hiatus, Seasons 3 and 4 were transmitted in 2011 and 2012 respectively, and Season 5 in 2014. Each season comprised 13 episodes of approximately half an hour each, except for Season 1 which comprised 14 episodes.
  • Winner of the 2007 Royal Television Society Award for Best Children's Drama, and winner of the 2008 BAFTA Cymru Award for Best Children's Programme
  • In January 2012 the character of Vlad from this series was voted number 17 in SFX magazine's poll of top 50 vampires.

Dividing Bar

The original two seasons were magnificent, brilliantly funny, witty and amusing, but the later seasons (after the 'hiatus') were not nearly as good, because the programme tried to become a 'serious' drama, and the humour suffered as a consequence. 9/10 for the first two seasons, 6/10 for the remainder of the series.
