Synopsis
In a small Norfolk village during World War II, John Curlew forms an increasingly close relationship with a Jewish refugee boy from Austria. However, the tough boys who form John's peer group dislike the foreigner as a coward and a sissy. John's divided loyalties lead ultimately to a grim denouement in this dark anti-war drama.
Notes
- Based on the 1960 novel of the same name by British author John Rae (1931-2006), who makes a cameo appearance in this film as the Vicar.
- The film was produced by the CFU (Children's Film Unit), a unique British film production unit which offered children from the ages of 10 to 16 the opportunity to learn about all aspects of filmmaking, by participating as both cast and crew in the making of professional-quality feature films. CFU films had a theatrical release, as well as being shown on British and overseas television, and were exhibited at international film festivals (where they sometimes picked up awards).
- This was the second film adaptation of John Rae's novel, the first being Reach for Glory (1962).
