Sweeney Todd
(2006)

TV Movie

Country: UK

Genre: Crime, Drama, Horror

IMDb

Synopsis

Ray Winstone plays a melancholic, philosophical Sweeney Todd, in this BBC adaptation of the classic Victorian penny dreadful about a barber with an unusual approach to customer service - after slitting the throats of his clients, he delivers the butchered remains to Mrs. Lovett's 'Fine Pies' eatery. However, it is not long before he realises that there are some fundamental flaws to his business model. Anyone fancy a meat pie?

Notes

  • This adaptation pays tribute to the source material ("The String of Pearls: A Romance", published 1846-47) by including a subplot about a necklace of pearls that is similar to that of the original story.
  • Fielding, the blind magistrate, who is played by David Warner, is an actual historical figure: John Fielding (1721-80), who lost his sight in a naval accident at the age of nineteen, was the half-brother of novelist Henry Fielding, and was magistrate at Bow Street from 1754. The "Blind Beak", as he came to be known, was renowned for his ability to identify criminals by the sound of their voices alone.

Well, I really liked it. I like the fact that Fielding is as melancholic as Sweeney Todd - a sort of mirror image of him, as it were. The movie is rather relentlessly grim, but it is indisputably atmospheric, and I think it is an interesting project to try to make a completely 'serious' version of the classic horror story. Oh, and I like the handsome, elegant boy [caps 3-8 in the BA Gallery] who delivers Mrs. Lovett's pies to Todd near the beginning.
