Macbeth
(1971)
AKA: The Tragedy of Macbeth
Synopsis
Roman Polanski's exciting and magnificently bloody adaptation of Shakespeare's play. Prompted by the supernatural prophecy of three witches, Macbeth is guided by his Lady into slaying King Duncan and assuming the throne. To keep the unsteady crown on his head, he finds himself murdering with ever less hesitation or discrimination, so that when Macduff joins his enemies in England, he responds by sending assassins to murder Macduff's wife and her son (Mark Dightam) in their castle in Fife. Meanwhile, as Macbeth embraces complete nihilism, Lady Macbeth's mind crumbles in guilt and madness.
