Putyovka v zhizn

AKA: Road to Life

Country: Soviet Union

Genre: Drama

When the police round up street boys, they are distributed to various orphanages. But many of the boys run away from every orphanage they are sent to. When a decision is made to send these feral boys to a prison for minors, Nikolai Sergeiev offers an alternative solution: to create a labour commune (essentially, the Russian equivalent of a 'Boys' Town') where the boys will work as carpenters, shoemakers, and various other trades, where they will feed themselves and remain free citizens. But will these good intentions succeed in practice?...

  • This film was the very first Soviet talking picture.
  • In addition, this film has the distinction of being the very first film to be awarded the best director award at any film festival. This was when the film was screened at the 1st annual Venice International Film Festival in 1932, which was the first major film festival ever to take place. The winners in each category were determined by an audience referendum, and Nikolai Ekk, the director of "Road to Life" was voted 'Most Convincing Director'.
