The first feature film by Luigi Comencini. Intended by the studio as an Italian answer to Boys Town, but Comencini made something more neorealistic than the studio wanted. It's not quite in the same league as De Sica's Umberto D. or as Bresson's Diary of a Country Priest, Mouchette, Au hasard Balthazar and Pickpocket (the first two based on novels by Georges Bernanos, the last loosely inspired by Crime and Punishment) but it's really surprisingly good, with most of the boys played by genuine Naples street urchins.
