Biography
Tomio Aoki made his debut in Yasujiro Ozu's "The Life of an Office Worker" ("Kaishain seikatsu", 1929), and it was under the great Japanese director's patronage that he was to find fame, initially with his second film, "Straightforward Boy" ("Tokkan kozô"), in which he plays a young lad who proves more than a handful for his would-be kidnapper. Sadly, only about 10 of the original 38 minutes of this film survives, but the film was so popular that Aoki adopted the Japanese title of the film (literally 'dashing boy') as his screen name for much of the remainder of his pre-war career. The filmography on the left of this page lists all Aoki's pre-war films. After the war he would have two further periods of acting. From 1952 to 1974 he would have mainly secondary movie roles. And then in the mid-1990s he would be coaxed to appear again before the camera by the director Makoto Shinozaki, in the latter's "Okaeri" (1995). He would make further appearances in films before his death in 2004, receiving a much-deserved Best Actor award at the 2000 Nantes Three Continents Festival for his performance in Shinozaki's "Not Forgotten" ("Wasurerarenu hitobito", 2000).
