The Detour (2016-2019)
silly but fun show.
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10Double Jeopardy (1999)
A fun thriller if you are willing to suspend disbelief on many fronts, but not much screen time for the boys. Weir's performance stands out.
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10L'Enfant sauvage (1969)
A rather bland and sterile take on an interesting story.
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10Hoot (2006)
It's clearly a kids' movie, the plot is rather far-fetched and the characters are totally two-dimensional. Logan Lerman's acting isn't the best but improves in the second half. I enjoyed it though. Brie Larson's character doesn't really end up as a romantic interest and there's a fairly evident subtextual relationship between Lerman and Linley. I love the scene when they're on the boat traversing the everglades together.
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10It (2017)
Nice cast, but disappointing. Leans too heavily on 80s-nostalgia cliches. Characters lack depth.
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10Mitt liv som hund (1985)
Strong performances throughout and good cinematography. The plot is unfocused with several underdeveloped recurring motifs: dogs, breasts, space, soccer, boxing... meanwhile, several minor characters were ignored.
Weirdly, Ingemar always seemed to have a girl on his arm, but no male companions. Even his brother was rotten and needlessly hostile. The cruel and unhinged Saga must have appealed to Ingemar because on an unconscious level she brought to mind the unstable mother.
I can see why this film is highly regarded, yet it definitely rubbed me wrong the way.
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10Prince Brat and the Whipping Boy (1994)
Nic Knight would be more suited for community theatre.
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10Silver Spoons (1982-1987)
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
It was an enjoyable watch, but Jake needed some more training with his acting.
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10The Stuff (1985)
Scott was hot!
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10American Gothic (2016)
By-the-numbers murder mystery. One dimensional characters. Bland but inoffensive. Not engaging enough for me to stick with it beyond the pilot, but fans of Gabriel Bateman might be interested as he is a main character and in every episode.
My Movie Rating: 5 / 10Ideal Home (2018)
The troubled boy showing up on the doorstep of a wealthy gay couple is veering on cliche at this point, but the film was still entertaining. Erasmus is a celebrity chef in a long term relationship with his production assistant Paul, though he has a son from a brief "experimentation" with heterosexuality, who in turn begets the grandson at the center of the story. It has a few pretty good jokes, but you can see them coming from a mile away. The plot is rather predictable as well. The product placement for Taco Bell is distractingly egregious.
My Movie Rating: 5 / 10Vacation (2015)
The plot is rather contrived but there are a few funny lines ("don't get your gender fluid all over me!") and who can resist Steele Stebbins??
My Movie Rating: 5 / 10Henry Danger (2014)
Not the worst tween show out there, and Jace is cute. I think the producers noticed there were some homoerotic overtones between Henry and Captain Man in the first batch of episodes (the latter makes a joke at one point about being 'engaged' to the former) so they quickly shoehorned in some female love interests for them, and the quality went way downhill. Oh and the little sister literally shouts all of her lines.
My Movie Rating: 4 / 10I Am Gabriel (2012)
this is in so-bad-it's-good territory. the acting is a step below local theatre troupes, and the plot is the typical cheesy religious fare (but I've seen much worse on that front). The "saving grace" is the beautiful lead.
