That Eye the Sky (1994)

A pretty odd little movie with quirky religious overtones. The talented Jamie Croft was the best young Aussi actor of the early to mid ninties and is worth watching. His performance won him the AFI Young Actors award.

That's What I Am (2011)

This is a very contrived and cliched movie, that seems to be inspired by a combination of TV's 'The Wonder Years' and 'Freaks and Geeks'. Unfortunately, the whole movie has an air of untruth about it. Everything from oh so homely and nostalgia by the numbers narration to the ridiculous where are they now inserts during the ending credits. It's also way too politically correct. Were the film makers too afraid to actually have the teacher as a gay person rather than a straight guy subject to rumours? There were plenty of real gay teachers back then and it was genuinely tough for them. It's almost as if the movie was written to introduce very naive young audiences to the concepts of homosexuality, being different, and bullying. But don't worry children, he's not homo at all, so nothing to fear, and as for the bullies they all end up as drug addicts or in jail. Ed Harris and Chase Ellison deserve better than this pile of sappy unconvincing goo.
