Happiness (1998)

Another indie director who thinks its fun and cute to take a wry look at modern loneliness and angst. No solutions or resolution of problems offered, of course. That would spoil the dreary fun. Also, usually I am very tolerant of slow-paced movies but felt like taking a meat axe to this one.

Evan Silverberg is very appealing, touching, and sensationally attractive in his one film.

Harlequin (1980)

Pretty fair, a re-take on the Rasputin story. DVD director commentary is interesting. I was puzzled because I knew it was an Australian movie, an early Simon Wincer film (later did Lonesome Dove, Free Willy & others)but with an American look & feel to it and lots of American accents. The commentary explains this was deliberate, trying for a generic international appeal without looking provincially Australian. I still chuckled over the presence of Broderick Crawford as the bad guy.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)

Harry has lost much of his frail sweetness. Dan is a more confident actor and Harry is much more in charge of things. Still a pleasure to see these kids work together in a film that to me is almost as delightful as the first, and even more involving.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001)

Beautiful, charming kids, superb casting & acting. One of the most delightful movies I've seen. I'm running out of superlatives!

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

Almost a totally different kind of experience compared to the first two. It is still a pleasure to watch the kids, now teenagers. Yes, the signs of heavy editing are obvious, e.g. in my favorite scene in the book, Harry's Patronus spell produces the stag - but the movie never explains it! I notice the geography of Hogwarts grounds has been changed which is ok but a bit odd following the previous films.

Hævnen (2010)

I completely agree with everyone. But it did occur to me that the ending left 2 dangerous characters not dealt with. Honestly though, I'm very glad that they weren't!

The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things (2004)

Gee, lucky me! A valuable look at trailer-trash America. It's bad enough that real children are trapped with such parents, but why associate child actors with such sleaze?

Yes, 9/10 for the brave performances of the three boys.

Henry Fool (1997)

Well, it's not a boy movie! I admit, I spent the first 15 minutes trying to dislike the film but just couldn't, as I stayed with it. My take is that it is essentially a wry parody of modern literary achievement - or maybe not. The title character reminded me of the guy you had to run into in college if he decided you were a fellow loner and a good listener. Very good acting all around.

Oh, and Liam Aiken is a total little charmer. :-) He appears in only the last 25 minutes of a 136 minute film.
