A Feast at Midnight (1994)
Unusual stuff -- below the Boys' Own japes there is an antinomian streak and a tinge of dark humour. Freddie Findlay is great.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Feather Boy (2004)
Good series based on Nicky Singer's excellent novel. The movie is a condensed version, obviously, and the condensing is handled well.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10La fessée (2016)
The Swiss short film Discipline is a lot better.
My Movie Rating: 7 / 10Finding Neverland (2004)
Nice performances all round, but the film is quite sugar-coated. For the real story, see the BBC mini-series The Lost Boys and read Andrew Birkin's book J.M. Barrie and the Lost Boys.
My Movie Rating: 5 / 10Fireflies in the Garden (2008)
My Movie Rating: 5 / 10Firehouse Dog (2006)
Charming, though nothing all that special. See it for Josh Hutcherson, an exceptionally gifted child actor, and his canine pal, played by four different dogs.
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10First Kid (1996)
Mediocre but fun.
My Movie Rating: 5 / 10Fisherman's Wharf (1939)
A curious mishmash: stereotyping of Italians slapped on ludicrously thick, interventions from a pet seal named Julius -- the animal actor is credited as 'Slicker, the seal' --, a nice scene where Bobby Breen sings with a proper robed boys' choir for once, several fine renditions of popular songs in Italian, and lots of scenes where secondary-child-roles veteran Tommy Bupp exercises his talent for playing smug and supercilious boys.
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10Five Children and It (2004)
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10Five Children and It (1991)
The BBC adapts one of the greatest of children's books. The Wouldbegoods may be the best thing E. Nesbit ever wrote but it is completely unsuited to screen adaptation; Five Children... by contrast is quite well suited. Cyril, not Robert, is made the hero of the besieged-castle episode, perhaps because Simon Godwin had the better acting chops or was keener -- he's now artistic director of the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, DC. Also, the 'Gypsy' and 'Red Indian' episodes are discreetly dropped, a wing coda is added and the uncle does not appear. Otherwise faithful to the book, though Helen Cresswell's adaptation adds a few jarringly modern locutions.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Five Clues to Fortune (1957)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10The Flaxton Boys (1969-1973)
Lavishly produced and rollicking good fun.
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Das fliegende Klassenzimmer (1954)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Das Fliegende Klassenzimmer (2003)
Surprisingly, a lovely film, set among the Thomaner, Bach's own choirboys. Hans Broich-Wuttke and Hauke Diekamp are the standouts for me.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Flipped (2010)
Interesting conceit, overly cutesy execution.
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10Flipper (1996)
Mediocre but worth seeing for Elijah Wood.
My Movie Rating: 5 / 10The Flower of Gloster (1967)
Charming and fascinating.
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Fluke (1995)
Somewhat similar plot to that of Jack Frost, but much darker. Likewise, not a great movie, and if you're looking for a simple, charming boy-and-his-dog story you're in for a bit of an unpleasant shock. But Max Pomeranc is a treat to watch, as always!
My Movie Rating: 5 / 10FlyBoy (2012)
Charming!
