Other Voices, Other Rooms (1997)
Seriously messes up the story told in the novel, not least by completely changing the ending.
My Movie Rating: 3 / 10Otona no miru ehon - Umarete wa mita keredo (1932)
Brilliant early silent by the great Ozu, who went on to give us masterpieces such as The Only Son, Late Spring, Early Summer, Tokyo Story, Late Autumn and An Autumn Afternoon. Also see Mr Thank You.
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10Otra vuelta de tuerca (1985)
Well this is an interesting one: The Turn of the Screw with a tutor rather than a governess and with a Miles in early adolescence that therefore turns into a story about repressed homosexuality -- unsurprisingly from de la Iglesia! Kind of thuddingly literal-minded but well worth a look. Some dialogue at the beginning is in Basque.
My Movie Rating: 7 / 10Our Mother's House (1967)
One of the films on which director Jack Clayton and composer Georges Delerue worked together. Dirk Bogarde is supposed to be the big draw but the film really belongs to the seven kids, who include Pamela Franklin from The Innocents; Phoebe Sarah Nicholls, who went on to play Cordelia Flyte in Granada Television's wonderful adaptation of Brideshead Revisited and Elizabeth Elliot in the 1995 Screen Two Persuasion; and of course Mark Lester. Bogarde recalled that on his first day his young colleagues left him "a jam jar stuffed with privet and some wilting Michaelmas daisies. Under it was a note. 'Let's hope you're as good as you're cracked up to be. You'd better be. Sincerely, The Children.' I loved every second of the film, which was one of the happiest I have ever made."
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Our New Errand Boy (1905)
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10The Outside Chance of Maximilian Glick (1988)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Ørnens øje (1997)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10På rymmen med Pippi Långstrump (1970)
The importance of the Pippi Longstocking books, first published shortly after the Second World War, is difficult to overstate. In particular, they did a great deal to increase respect for both children and women as strong, autonomous people. Their anarchic, subversive humour makes them a huge hit with most kids and many adults. The 1969 TV series, scripted by Astrid Lindgren herself and made up of thirteen half-hour episodes, is surely the definitive screen Pippi. This film is a spinoff of the series, but it's a fine piece of cinema in its own right and has now been beloved by several generations of children.
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Pablo and the Dancing Chihuahua (1968)
Armando Islas, an ocarina and a chihuahua are great fun to watch in this refreshing curiosity: Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, in 1968, giving us a picture that throws sympathy wholly on the side of an undocumented child migrant from Mexico to the USA. Now extremely rare: Disney presumably want to pretend it never happened. But it did -- this too is Disney, I guess?! You've got to see the thing.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Paddington (2014)
The lovely books were in the 1970s made into a delightful stop-motion series that was scripted by Michael Bond himself and that must rank alongside Pingu as one of the best animated kids' series ever. As a fan of the originals, I was flinching a bit as I sat down to watch this, but it turned out to be OK. Samuel Joslin does a nice job and later turned up in the BBC's 2015 remake of The Go-Between.
My Movie Rating: 7 / 10Ang pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros (2005)
Excellent movie with great acting from Nathan Lopez in quite a demanding role. This film was massively popular in the Philippines. The later films Boy, Pisay and Baybayin by the same director are good as well. Also see Anita's Last Cha-Cha, Dagitab, The Woman in the Septic Tank and I'm Drunk, I Love You.
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10The Pagemaster (1994)
I quite enjoyed this one!
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10Paisito (2008)
A quiet, sober, occasionally clunky piece thematically similar to Infancia Clandestina and Machuca but presenting its own unique and interesting take on the subject matter.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Pajarico (1997)
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Palla di neve (1995)
My Movie Rating: 6 / 10Paloma de papel (2003)
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10Pan (2015)
Not bad at all. Great special effects.
My Movie Rating: 7 / 10The Paper Lads (1977-1979)
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Paperboys (2001)
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10Paperhouse (1988)
Original and excellent.
