Synopsis
When schoolboy Volodya (Pavel Sklyarenko) comes home for the holidays, he meets up with his best friend Chechevitsyn (Vladimir Yevsikov), who has been invited to stay with Volodya's family. However, Chechevitsyn, who likes to imagine himself as an Indian chieftain, persuades Volodya to run away with him to America, a plan that causes much distress to Volodya's sisters when they overhear the boys' conversations. The boys do not go very far before returning, however, and it is decided that Chechevitsyn, as the instigator, should be sent back to his own home. As he departs, Chechevitsyn signs himself in Volodya's sister's journal as 'Montezuma Hawk Claw, Chieftain of the Invincible', having earned a grudging respect from the family for his boldness and imagination.
Notes
- The title of this film is Russian for "Once Upon a Time in America".
- Adapted from the 1887 short story "Malchiki" ("Boys") by Russian author Anton Chekhov (1860-1904). Chekhov is considered to be one of the greatest writers of short fiction in the history of literature.
