Synopsis

One day, without warning, Natalie Harris' husband walks out on her, leaving her with no money, no car and two spoilt brat children, Ben (Christian Bale) and Alice - who quickly blame her for not being able to keep her husband!

Comprising 4 episodes, each approximately an hour in length
Written by English author and essayist Fay Weldon (b. 1931). Weldon's 1987 novel "The Heart of the Country" was actually based on the TV serial, rather than the other way round. As she explained in 2015, after the TV show she made the story into a novel "when I realised that one of the minor characters was actually the major one, so it was much changed. I think it's the favourite of all my novels."
