Synopsis

After the suicide of hated industrialist Tom Garner (Spencer Tracy), his best friend Henry (Ralph Morgan) recalls his former boss' life, family problems, and his rise from track walker to president of the railroad, beginning with the time when, as a boy, Tom took Henry under his wing and taught him how to stand up for himself.

Notes

In its overall concept (using a sequence of flashbacks to tell the story of the rise of an industrial magnate) "The Power and the Glory" anticipated "Citizen Kane" (1941) by eight years (though there are also important differences between the two films, and "Citizen Kane" is arguably far more ambitious in terms of its themes). Orson Welles claimed he never saw "The Power and the Glory", but it is believed that his screenwriter, Herman J. Mankiewicz, almost certainly did.

Interesting idea, innovative treatment, but does end up overreaching itself a bit.
