Synopsis
When boatyard owner Jim Doherty breaks his leg in an accident, his son Dick volunteers to deliver a canal boat to a buyer on his behalf, taking with him his two younger siblings, 12-year-old Elizabeth and 10-year-old Michael. During their 220-mile trip, they encounter all kinds of dangers and difficulties, but also make new friends as well as learn about British canals and wildlife, and the people who live and work on the waterways.
Notes
- Loosely based on the 1911 travel book of the same name by English-born poet, playwright and author E. Temple Thurston (1879-1933), the series was conceived by producer Bill Grundy as combining adventure with educational content.
- This was the first Granada Television series to be filmed in colour (though initially transmitted in black and white).
- Elizabeth and Michael Doherty were real life siblings.
