Really superb, emotionally nuanced, portrait of an introverted boyhood.

Unique and excellent. The director, Roger Lambert, now a noted deer biologist, has been aptly described as a kind of English Éric Rohmer with a special interest in boys and their relationships with each other. As well as this one, there's Follow You Follow Me, about the intense best friendship between two boys of about fourteen, and A Seaside Story, a lighter piece about two very different seventeen-year-old boys taking a seaside holiday together. Lambert's earliest film, Split, is a bit different: it's about an eleven-year-old who, while dealing with his parents' breakup and gaining some solace from kind treatment by male form tutor at school, becomes convinced an alien being is communicating with him -- also a very interesting piece, though marred slightly by the sentimentality that affects many films on boyhood made by 'subject specialists'.
