Biography
Born John Charles Smith, 'Jack' was the youngest of three siblings, all of whom took to the stage after being abandoned by their father. His sister Gladys, the eldest, was to become a phenomenon as Mary Pickford, and Jack too became a popular star, if never quite as popular as his sister. John Holmstrom writes: "Jack had a sensitive oval face, and brown hair which fell becomingly forward unless brilliantined. According to need, he smiled impishly or suffered beautifully, and was a much-loved juvenile lead right up to the late Twenties." ("The Moving Picture Boy", pp. 10-11) His private life was stormy to say the least, and marred by alcoholism. He died aged thirty-six, having starred in just over a hundred movies. The filmography on this page represents only a sample of his work.
