According to research by his biographer Philip Leibfried, Sabu was originally called Selar Shaik. His elder brother (later his manager) was called Dastagir. But this latter name was mistakenly entered as their family name when the brothers arrived in England, and it became their surname, the elder brother henceforth taking the first name Shaik (i.e. he went from being Dastagir Shaik to Shaik Dastagir), with Selar Shaik becoming Selar Dastagir. It was producer Alexander Korda who devised the name Sabu for Selar, thus finally transforming his name to Sabu Dastagir.
